Cape Charles, Virginia

We just spent a long weekend in Cape Charles, Virginia, which is at the southernmost point of the Delmarva peninsula just a couple miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. The gorgeous house we stayed in is situated in the Bay Creek gated community and it was awesome! Moreover, it has both views of the Chesapeake Bay and of the Bay Creek Golf Club, and only a scenic three and a half hour drive from Annapolis, MD. If you’re looking for a great getaway spot, let us know and we’ll provide you all the details.

Besides relaxing in the top shelf digs, we had plenty of time to do what we do best…bar hop. We were there for the weekend and all December Fridays in Cape Charles are “Festive Fridays”. On this Festive Friday their “downtown” was full of holiday cheer complete with music, hot cider, cookies, marching band, and of course, Santa! We spent the day…and night…sampling a wide array of Cape Charles’ local beverages. Luckily, we made our first stop at Buskey Cider on the Bay where we enjoyed a delicious 8 serving flight of their cold ciders. Running Buskey that day was Pat, who gave us the 411 on Cape Charles and what Festive Friday activities to check out. We enjoyed the tasty ciders, and bonding with Pat, so much that we made a date to return there the next day.

As we strolled down Mason Avenue we stopped in the Cape Charles Distillery. The distillery is very classy and we were able to grab a couple of comfortable window seats to people watch as the daylight waned and the street’s holiday lights brightened. The family run business has a number of quality spirits for straight up enjoyment or made into delicious cocktails. We also made a date to go back again for their expansive Bloody Mary bar on Sunday. On this Festive Friday we also had enjoyable dining and drinking experiences at Kelly’s Gingernut Pub and AJ’s Bar and Grill. For a small town we were quite impressed with the food and drink options available.

The rest of the weekend was great. As promised, we looped back to Buskey Cider where Darcel was now running things. Darcel, like Pat the day before, was full of local information and Cape Charles history. The ladies really made us feel right at home at Buskey Cider. Then, just outside of “downtown” we found the Cape Charles Brewing Company. Proprietors, Deb and Mark, have an impressive operation offering a wide range of their brews, good food, and music provided by Mark and a host of local musicians. Even an area wide power outage on Sunday morning couldn’t stop the beer from flowing, the food being served, and the music from rocking. Actually, the temporary outage seemed to just add to the fun atmosphere. Kudos to Deb and Mark for creating a happening spot for both young and old to enjoy.

This will probably be our last article for 2023, so we want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
