Irv's and Del Florida

Updated: Sep 3, 2021

We just had two wide ranging experiences over a short five day period. On August 26th we had the privilege of visiting Irv's Basement Bar in Pasadena, Maryland. It wasn't just any night at Irv's, the crowd was there to celebrate owner and bartender, Irv Koch's, 98th birthday. That's not a typo, Irv turned 98, and he was crazy busy serving up drinks, telling one liners, and getting hugs from everyone. He's been doing that in his own basement since 1963 when the establishment was dubbed Club Sunset Knoll. Since there are no signs on the building's exterior, it's come to be known simply as Irv's Basement Bar...the last of the residential basement bars in Maryland. Hint: If you're going to Irv's for the first time please be prepared to join the hundreds of other happy patrons who have left their own personal souvenir to help decorate the place, and to give it that dive hall of fame feel. It was a great night celebrating with friends, locals, and the host of honor. Happy Birthday, Irv, we love you! We'll surely be back again on August 26, 2022, and more times in between!

Our second fun event was on August 31st when we headed to the Songbyrd Music House in the Adams Morgan district of Washington, D.C. We were there to see and hear Del Florida play their special high energy brand of original music. This was the band's first gig since being forced on COVID hiatus back in March 2020. The band sounded great playing their old favorites mixed with brand new material. It was clear that the enthusiastic and loyal crowd was excited to have them back. Ride the wave and check out Del Florida!
