Natchez, Mississippi

Hola! Welcome to James and Yolie's new web site!

COVID put a hit on our 2020 travels, but we're back in the saddle now in 2021. We had a great trip to Natchez, Mississippi over the 4th of July holiday weekend. King's Tavern in Natchez is the oldest tavern in Mississippi, but it is currently closed. The stop at King's Tavern, closed or not, qualified as visiting our 25th state's oldest bar. Since we were still thirsty and hunting for old bars, a local outside King's Tavern pointed us to the Saloon Under the Hill. We made the walk to the Saloon and it proved to be a true bucket list bar!

The Saloon is believed to be the oldest commercial building on the Mississippi River. It is a great spot and a must if you are in Natchez. Everything about it screams bucket list bar. The simple strong drinks, colorful locals, dollars bills tacked to the ceiling, awesome live music, and the Mark Twain Guest House above the bar make it a great place on a hot Mississippi day or night. We were there for the 4th, and the Saloon was the perfect location to ooh and aah at the awesome fireworks shot from a barge on the Mississippi River.

We stayed the weekend at the Guest House Historic Mansion in Natchez. We highly recommend it! It's got cozy rooms, great porches for rocking, talking and having a cocktail, an in-house Mediterranean restaurant, very affordable prices, and an included breakfast hosted by Henry...the oldest southern living souvenir. We guarantee that your day will always get off to a great start when you see Henry at breakfast.

Natchez is an interesting town, but it's not on the way to anywhere. Much like Savannah, it is filled with many colorful characters because of it being off the beaten path. The people there are very friendly and anywhere you stop you won't be wanting for friendly conversation and helpful folks. If you do make the drive through the seemingly endless swamp from New Orleans to Natchez (look out for the alligators crossing the road) you won't be dissappointed, and we beg of you that you cruise into the Saloon Under the Hill. While you're there say "Hi" to our friend, Stephen, he's the guy with the helicopter parked outside.
