In our previous article we wrote about our wonderful week exploring the Island of Jersey. During our stay we had the opportunity to take the ferry over to Saint-Malo, France for an overnight stay. To learn more about Saint-Malo and the surrounding area check out the link. The ferry from Jersey is a very pleasant and scenic one-hour ride. The spacious boat also transports automobiles and has food and beverage service, as well as a duty free store. Many Jersey citizens make day trips to Saint-Malo to take advantage of the duty free shop on board. In addition, the day hoppers get more purchasing power in France using Euros than the Pounds back on their home island. Moreover, Saint-Malo has many great bars as evident by the number of “happy” merrymakers who make their return trip to Jersey at the end of the day.
Our awesome Jersey hosts, Dave and Gail, also were our guides in Saint-Malo. The walled town with its cobblestone and winding streets makes one feel they are in a Harry Potter movie. We had a great time exploring the town’s many watering holes, and soaking in the history and impressive architecture. The Saint Patrick Irish Pub with all its nook and crannies, plus the many soccer jerseys hanging from the rafters, was a great find. The downstairs is tight and cozy with all its crazy angles, while the upstairs has a unique sunken seating area complete with a barrel table.
Another bucket list worthy bar was Le Cafe du Coin. This place is truly one of a kind! Seats at the bar are actually amusement park swings; there are hundreds of dolls all over the place; innumerable knickknacks and oddities; and the bathrooms are accessed via an old time phone booth. If you ever have the opportunity to get to Saint-Malo, having a drink here is a must!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Saint-Malo, and we can’t thank Dave and Gail for the great time we had there and in Jersey. This is our last article from our European Vacation. Our next journey we’ll be heading up north to our Canadian neighbor. So, au revoir for now!
